Finally got an Engine

Postby David H » Tue Apr 28, 2009 11:33 pm

I Purchased A 12 HP Frick, Friday. Its been a long time hoping for one, and I hope to get it home sometime next wk.
This engine has been in our family before, belonging to a great-great uncle when new, and run for him by my grandad.
Will have pics when I go to pick it up.

And from Texas come even more congrats! How wonderful it must be to get a family engine....what I wouldn't give to just have a picture of Uncle Leiford's Advance Rumely, or Uncle John's Case, much less the engine. Both were scrapped in 1937 when the barn they were in was blown down... Tx Hwy 121 runs through there now.

If you can get as much as a 100 on the old gal safely, you should be able to handle as much as a 28' thresher with it.

Enjoy!

Thanks to al of you for the encouragement.
JJ-- I thought a Frick might bring you out !!
I need to get the lil jewel home & cleaned out to see what kinda shape it is in. I know it has got as close to perfect gearing & wheels as you will see on any engine thats not been worked on.
I'd be thrilled to death with 100# on it, but with a single row lap, I figger about 60-70 max. I just hope I don't have to get too deep into the boiler at this time.
The front flue sheet looked a bit thin at the bottom, but its in a dark place, so will need to see for sure.
The man I got it from was talking of having it converted to a dry bottom--- I do know it needs flues, as I saw at least one plugged.
Hoping to get it home early next wk.
PS Mike McKnight will be proud of us-- looks like we may haul it home on a 12,000 lb bumper hitch trailer.  -- But at 12,000 lb itself, thats not too big a stretch for 30 miles.

There is another booger on the single lap Fricks is that I seem to recall a lot of their shell was around 9/32" when new...the good thing is this, a few bolts, a little plumbing, whip the engine off and the boiler is out of there. It is small enough that it is almost a miniature, and right now (and I am not in anyway dispargaging anyone else in the boiler bidness) Jeff Lund appears to have the edge on price and appearance as far as a new, old looking boiler is concerned, if ya gotta go that route.

I am expecting to see pix! BTW does this one have an axle tank or side tanks?

Heres a picture of the lil Frick. I need to resize the other few I got before getting rained on.
The axle tank on this one seems to bee in really good shape JJ. I may see how it goes before committing to a new boiler just yet-- tho I'd like to have one on it.

Be you tee ful! It certainly has the " late model" machinery on it, but the single row lap does throw me. Your engine is about identical to Gary Flacks...it has a real nice boiler on it and it runs at about original pressure. When the diameter of your boiler is small, like on these 'uns, the calcs don't getcha so bad. Little known fact that the ASME would let you build a single row lap S stamp boiler as long as you didn't go over 100 psi. The other nice thing is the staybolt pattern looks nice and tight.

Its a keeper!

Of course you do know that it is illegal to take such a historic item across the state line don't you? Guess you are going to have to let me keep the engine for you...

Gona camoflage it to get over the line!
JJ, do you know what the original mawp was on the 12's?
I figgered 100# was probably about, or maybe 125 # max?
I really want to get a ut on it to see where it stands.
