Miscellanious engine pictures

Postby David H » Sat Mar 01, 2008 3:52 pm

Thought we could use a new thread for all the different makes of engines.
Here is a Woods Bros, pulling a wooden Aultman Taylor thresher, at McClouth, Kansas, 1969.
I think this is a 20 hp, The old gent that owned it was a super nice fellow. I have his name down, as Mr Hall. This is the engine that, I believe, is sitting in an impound lot, tied up in litigation these days. It was a real good runner in those days.

Here is a 24 Port Huron, at the Ag Hall Of Fame, Bonner Springs, Kansas, in 1969. I thought I was steering the engine, when this was taken, but on closer inspection, it wasn't me.

Here is the same engine in 2006, on static display, at the Ag Hall.

Brian, the story I heard was that the Woods Bro. engine was sold to Ok. Somewhere in the mix, a bad check was involved, and its evidently been in impound for a long time. I can't verify that this is a true story, but it most likely is true. Also heard thet the boiler was shot. That may, or may not be so either.

The true story about the engine in impound; it was owned by a fellow in OK (now deceased). It was sold to a fellow in IL, paid for by a hot check. The hot check was written by a broker, the end buyer wasn't happy with the boiler (does need a lot of work!), refused to pay, on and on,......have I lost everyone yet?????? At least this is the story I've heard.....

Heres anohter of Gil Robert's 28 Minnie plowing, at Somerset,Va, in Aug, 2006.
Th eground was hard as a brick. But the Minnie was doing a fine job with the 12 bottom John Deere plow. Vic Johnson was the engineer. I accused him of breaking the sound barrier with the Minnie. He sure did have her moving.

My friend, Rufus Murray was on the last plow, I was on the next to last, and Frank Johnson was on the one next to me-- and Steve Gulick is on the front one. I don't know the gents on the other two.

Heres the 32 Reeves, at Ken Eder's place, in Nov, 2006. Also in this picture, is our "esteemed" mod, MR Gaar Scott, AKA Lawrence Swanz, and Mike McKnight. The three of us struck up a friendship at that open house, that seems to be one of the long lasting kind--- forever, I hope.

David,
Did you notice the huge smiles this Reeves evoked on Lawrence and Mike!?? They knew I used to crawl all over it when it lived here at Whitefish and that probably had something to do with the smiles as well?

yeah I did Gary, as an old saying we have around here goes, "They were smilin so big, I thought their throat was cut!!"
I bet they were thinking of you, is why they were smilin so big?
This is where I accused them of "pushin" an old crippled man off the engine-- when in reality, they pulled me on the Reeves, so I didn't have to hobble around on my bum knee.
Those are a couple of "jewels",are Mike, & Lawrence. :)

Hope these will show up OK. It's the Holt, that replaced the 20 mule teams, to haul borax, from Death Valley. It was used till the the railroad was built in there, I believe? Actually, I think it was a "Best" engine? Anyway, they called her "Old Dinah".
There was a very interesting museum in Furnace Creek on the mining, & transportation of the borax.
